This is Between the Flippers
Welcome to Between the Flippers, my take on all things pinball—from gameplay to cultural connections, concepts, and creativity—all explored from my perspective as a Black pinball player. The name, Between the Flippers, is an ironic twist inspired by the parody talk show Between Two Ferns. For pinball players, "between the flippers" is exactly where you don’t want the ball to be—a place of defeat and frustration. But here, it becomes a space for reflection, exploration, and maybe even a little humor about the game and community.
Pinball is more than a game; it’s a culture, an art form, and a bridge between generations. This blog explores these dimensions with articles that dig into everything from classic machines to new concepts I’d love to see (like a Wu-Tang Clan-themed machine). I also discuss the history of the representation of POC in pinball—or the lack thereof—and what it means to be part of a community where diverse voices are still emerging.
This is a space to imagine new themes, discuss the creativity and stories behind the machines, and consider how we can open the community up to more perspectives. Between the Flippers is a space where the ball isn’t supposed to be—but maybe that’s exactly what makes it worth talking about.
Whether you’re a seasoned player, a newbie, or just curious about pinball, I hope this blog invites you into the world of pinball in a way you haven’t seen before. Welcome to Between the Flippers—where the game, the culture, and new perspectives meet.
